FDOT's $19.8 Million Repaving of SR 56 and Bruce B. Downs Brings Nightly Closures Through Fall 2027

Nightly lane closures are underway on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and SR 56 in Wesley Chapel as the Florida Department of Transportation mills and repaves 7.3 miles of the corridor's two busiest roads, a $19.8 million project that will run through fall 2027. For drivers who use either road for a daily commute, school drop-off or a run to the grocery store, that means more than a year of overnight work zones on streets that already carry some of the heaviest traffic in Pasco County.

The project covers SR 56 from just west of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard east to Meadow Pointe Boulevard, and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard/CR 581 from SR 56 south to just past CR 54/Wesley Chapel Boulevard. Together the two stretches form an L-shape through the center of Wesley Chapel, cutting past neighborhoods and schools on both sides of I-75. Work began August 24, 2026, and the contractor, Preferred Materials, Inc., is expected to finish by fall 2027.

What's actually closing

Closures happen overnight, from 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., and FDOT is scheduling them week by week rather than posting a single calendar for the whole project. That means the exact block that closes on any given night depends on where crews are working and how the weather cooperates. FDOT lists its closures as weather permitting, so a stalled front or a heavy afternoon storm, which is not unusual in Wesley Chapel, can push a night's work to the next available window.

More than fresh asphalt

The scope goes beyond milling and repaving old pavement. Near the SR 56 and Meadow Pointe Boulevard intersection, crews are reworking the merge area and roadway transitions to build two 12-foot turn lanes. That intersection has been a chronic pinch point for drivers turning into or out of Meadow Pointe during peak hours, with left-turning cars sometimes backing up traffic on SR 56 itself.

At SR 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, the project adds intersection safety upgrades, ADA improvements, minor drainage work, traffic signal upgrades and new overhead lighting. None of that work requires daytime closures, but it adds to the list of nighttime tasks crews are working through over the next year.

What drivers should do

FDOT posts updated closure schedules on its project page as work progresses, since the exact nights and segments shift depending on weather and how construction is sequenced. Residents who want advance notice of closures near their commute can sign up for project email alerts through FDOT's Tampa Bay project page.

FDOT has not said whether the project's later phases, closer to the CR 54/Wesley Chapel Boulevard end of Bruce B. Downs, will bring longer or more disruptive closures than the ones scheduled so far. For now, the agency says it will keep posting segment-by-segment updates as crews move through the corridor toward the fall 2027 finish date.
