Pasco County Opens Registration for 1,500 Free Trees, New Lottery Replaces First-Come Rush

Pasco County is giving away 1,500 free trees this fall, and for the first time, getting one means entering a lottery instead of racing to a parking lot at dawn. Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources opened registration for the giveaway this week, and the window closes fast: residents have until Oct. 1 to sign up for a shot at a free tree.

Winners will be notified Oct. 2. Pickup is set for 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 10, at three locations spread across the county: Starkey Wilderness Park, Withlacoochee River Park, and Crews Lake Wilderness Park.

The trees on offer are Dahoon holly, Little Gem magnolia, red cedar and red maple, all species suited to Florida yards and known for handling the state's heat, humidity and storm winds better than many ornamental transplants.

Why the lottery, why now

Earlier giveaways, including the county's spring Arbor Day event, ran first-come, first-served. That meant lines forming before sunrise and trees running out within minutes for residents who couldn't get there early. The new registration and lottery system spreads the odds more evenly, giving everyone who signs up during the window an equal shot regardless of what time they show up on distribution day.

It's a modest but meaningful shift for a county still working to rebuild tree canopy lost to the string of hurricanes that have battered the Tampa Bay region in recent years. Free trees delivered through county programs are one of the more direct ways households can replace what came down in their own yards without paying nursery prices.

Because the three pickup parks sit in different corners of the county, from New Port Richey-area residents near Starkey to those closer to Dade City and the Spring Hill line near Withlacoochee and Crews Lake, most households should have a location within a reasonably short drive. Registration is handled online, and residents who miss the Oct. 1 deadline will have to wait for the county's next giveaway to try again.

The county has not said whether it plans to keep the lottery format for future giveaways, including the next Arbor Day event, or whether it was a one-time test tied to demand for this fall's distribution.
