A fatal crash before dawn Friday has closed all southbound lanes of Interstate 75 near mile marker 279 in Wesley Chapel, and troopers are diverting every southbound vehicle off the highway at the Wesley Chapel Boulevard exit — snarling one of the region's busiest commutes for miles. Drivers heading south through Pasco County should expect long delays and seek alternate routes.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, troopers were dispatched to the scene at about 2:52 a.m. As of the morning rush, all southbound lanes remained blocked while emergency crews worked the scene, and officials had not said when the interstate would reopen.

Avoid I-75 southbound near Wesley Chapel Boulevard. All southbound lanes are closed at mile marker 279 with no reopening time confirmed. Expect the closure and heavy backups to last for hours during the morning commute.

What we know

Local news reports and FHP indicate the crash was fatal. Florida Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed emergency vehicles blocking all southbound lanes as responders worked, with traffic backed up well behind the scene and funneling toward the Wesley Chapel Boulevard (State Road 54) exit.

The number of vehicles involved and whether anyone else was hurt had not been confirmed as of Friday morning, and investigators had not released a timeline for clearing the roadway.

What drivers should do

  • Skip southbound I-75 through Wesley Chapel until the crash clears — the exit diversion at Wesley Chapel Boulevard is pushing heavy volume onto local roads.
  • Build in extra time. With all lanes blocked during rush hour, backups are stretching several miles and are expected to persist for hours.
  • Slow down and move over for emergency responders working the scene.
  • Check conditions before you go. Real-time closures and reopening updates are posted on Florida's official traveler system at FL511.com.

Expect surface streets around the Wesley Chapel Boulevard interchange — including the nearby shopping and dining corridor — to fill up quickly as diverted traffic pours off the interstate. Grove Boulevard and other parallel routes may offer relief, but they too will carry extra load until lanes reopen.

This is a developing situation. Details, including the cause of the crash and when the interstate will reopen, may change as officials release more information.
