If you've been waiting to drive a straight east-west shot from the Suncoast Parkway corridor to U.S. 41, you'll be waiting a while longer. Pasco County has again pushed back the timeline for the next stretch of the Ridge Road Extension, the multi-decade project meant to ease cross-county travel through one of Florida's fastest-growing areas.
Under the revised schedule, the initial two-lane section running from the Suncoast Parkway area east to U.S. 41 in Land O' Lakes is now expected to open in early-to-mid summer 2027, with the complete four-lane roadway not anticipated until early 2028. That's a meaningful slip: as recently as last year, the county's public information office said the project was on track for fall 2026.
- Project: Phase II of the Ridge Road Extension, from N. Sunlake Boulevard to U.S. 41 (Land O' Lakes Boulevard)
- Length: 3.75 miles
- Cost: roughly $85 million
- New revised timeline: two lanes open early-to-mid summer 2027; full four lanes early 2028
- Main cause of delay: construction and clearance of the new bridge over the CSX railroad tracks
Why the road keeps slipping
According to the project notes, the primary culprit behind the latest delay is the new bridge over the CSX railroad tracks that run parallel to U.S. 41. Building a structure over an active rail line involves a notoriously complex construction and clearance process — coordination with the railroad, engineering reviews, and inspections that can't simply be rushed.
The bridge has long been one of the most technically demanding elements of this leg. When the contract was awarded, the scope already flagged the CSX crossing as a centerpiece of the work, alongside a new intersection at Land O' Lakes Boulevard and Connerton Boulevard, according to contractor Cone & Graham.
What the finished road will deliver
For all the frustration over the calendar, the end product is designed to be a genuine upgrade for west and central Pasco. Beyond simply moving more cars, the extension is built to do several jobs at once:
- Better east-west connectivity across a part of the county that has filled in rapidly with new neighborhoods.
- Hurricane evacuation relief, adding another route to get residents out ahead of a storm.
- Bike and pedestrian access, including a five-foot sidewalk, a 12-foot multi-use pathway, and five-foot bike lanes.
- Wildlife crossings built into the corridor to let animals move safely across the new roadway.
The project also bundles in utility work — a 24-inch water main and a 20-inch reclaimed water main — and is expected to improve access toward the Suncoast Parkway corridor's growing medical and research developments, per the contractor's project summary.
What it means for drivers right now
In the near term, the practical takeaway is simple: the work zones aren't going anywhere soon. Drivers traveling near the construction area — particularly along U.S. 41 in Land O' Lakes — should continue to expect lane shifts, reduced speeds, and occasional delays. In earlier project updates, the county noted the U.S. 41 speed limit near the work zone had been lowered to 45 mph, and that kind of restriction is typical while heavy construction continues.
Note: Timelines on large infrastructure projects can move again. Treat the 2027 and 2028 dates as the county's current best estimate, not a guarantee — especially with railroad coordination involved.
If your route already runs through the Land O' Lakes work zone, build in a few extra minutes and watch for changing lane patterns. For the latest closures, check Pasco County's Transportation Engineering Department updates and FDOT's Tampa Bay lane-closure listings before peak travel times.
The big picture
The Ridge Road Extension has been one of Pasco's longest-running infrastructure sagas — the first phase took more than two decades to bring to fruition before opening several years ago. This next leg, while far quicker by comparison, is once again testing local patience. For families who've watched the orange barrels go up and down for years, the message from this latest update is familiar: the road is coming, just not quite yet.
